The scope of senior citizen service organizations is broad. Some are government funded programs that assist the elderly in getting the medical attention they need, such as affordable prescriptions and doctor visits. Others are local, and offer social activity groups for seniors, free hot meals, and skill development classes.
Professionals who run these organizations may have bachelor’s degrees or higher, often boasting training in areas like physical therapy, psychology, nursing, home care, hospice, and social services. Organizations that help senior citizens may also offer services for the disabled or veterans. Some professionals have backgrounds in financial planning and aim to assist senior citizens with their retirement plans.
Another service offered by senior citizens service organizations is travel. Many groups and programs offer transportation for the elderly to and from medical centers, day centers, and doctor appointments. This may also involve discounts on bus transportation across the city or to farther destinations.
Professionals in this industry must possess compassion for others, along with the proper training in their specific field. An ability to work with others in a community setting is a plus too. Many professionals bring their individual training to the job, whether that lies in occupational therapy, social services, or nursing skills.
Related sub categories to senior citizens service organizations include assisted living facilities, youth organizations and centers, and disabled person services organizations. The major goal of organizations that improve the lives of senior citizens should be to provide group services, individual care, and advisement for the elderly on anything from retirement planning to medical assistance.

Senior groups are great ways at receiving discounts on activities throughout the year. You will probably have to meet certain requirements in order to join an organization. For example, you may have to be retired, a certain age, or live in a certain assisted living community. If you’re in retirement you should receive information in the mail about local activities. Look in a phone book and find the phone number of an organization you're interested in and you can call them with any questions you have. You can then find out what type of programs they have available for its members and get an example of an activity they do. Programs for the development of new skills are also a popular resource senior groups have. If you're already a citizen of a senior center or community you may already have enough information on groups that you can join. You may find you're interested in becoming a very involved member and help in the planning process for field trips or other programs. Planning trips that require travel can often be done within a senior group since most places will give discounts to those that travel with a certain amount of people. If a lot of people in a group need medical care, you may find a way for all of you to travel to the nearest hospital or medical center together to save money. Senior organizations are very reliable when it comes to getting the assistance and care you need. If you still live at home and need help, joining a senior citizen organization can do just what you need. Some elderly groups may have an age requirement. If you're in retirement and want to join a group to keep involved in society, you should be able to ask your doctor if they know of any senior programs in your area that you could join.
